Background Information

Guan Yu ROK Guide

Guan Yu, courtesy name Yunchang, was a general serving under the warlord Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han dynasty of China. Along with Zhang Fei, he shared a brotherly relationship with Liu Bei and accompanied him on most of his early exploits.

Guan Yu played a significant role in the events leading up to the end of the Han dynasty and the establishment of Liu Bei’s state of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period. While he is remembered for his loyalty towards Liu Bei, he is also known for repaying Cao Cao’s kindness by slaying Yan Liang, a general under Cao Cao’s rival Yuan Shao, at the Battle of Boma.

After Liu Bei gained control of Yi Province in 214, Guan Yu remained in Jing Province to govern and defend the area for about seven years. In 219, while he was away fighting Cao Cao’s forces at the Battle of Fancheng, Liu Bei’s ally Sun Quan broke the Sun–Liu alliance and sent his general Lü Meng to conquer Liu Bei’s territories in Jing Province.

By the time Guan Yu found out about the loss of Jing Province after his defeat at Fancheng, it was too late. He was subsequently captured in an ambush by Sun Quan’s forces and executed.

Guan Yu’s life was lionized and his achievements glorified to such an extent after his death that he was deified during the Sui dynasty. Through generations of storytelling, culminating in the 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, his deeds and moral qualities have been given immense emphasis, making Guan Yu one of East Asia’s most popular paradigms of loyalty and righteousness.

He is still worshiped by many Chinese people today in mainland China, Taiwan, Tibet, Hong Kong and among many overseas Chinese communities. In religious devotion, he is reverentially called the “Divus Guan” (Guān Dì) or “Lord Guan” (Guān Gōng).

He is a deity worshiped in Chinese folk religion, popular Confucianism, Taoism, and Chinese Buddhism, and small shrines to him are almost ubiquitous in traditional Chinese shops and restaurants. His hometown Yuncheng has also named its airport after him.

Best Guan Yu Skills

Guan Yu has one of the best skill sets in Rise of Kingdoms. They will literally make you want to play him as your primary commander all the way because of how insanely good his skills are. If you truly want to have him play at his best, then this guide will explain how to use his skills to propel the combat effectiveness to the maximum.

Guan Yu Rise of Kingdoms Guide
Saint of War
Saint of War ROK

Rage Requirement: 1000

Deals direct damage to up to 3 enemies in a fan-shaped area and silences these targets for 3 seconds (damage dealt to all targets will be decreased by 15% for each additional enemy). When Guan Yu is serving as the secondary commander, decrease Damage Factor.

Upgrade Preview:

Damage Factor (When Secondary Commander): 550 / 650 / 750 / 850 / 1000
Direct Damage Factor: 1100 / 1300 / 1500 / 1700 / 2000

Basically, Saint of War means you want to keep Guan Yu as the primary commander. Because he can do upwards to 2,000 damage per target. Each time he hits a target, the damage is reduced by 15%. So, the main target will always get the full damage while the subsequent target gets reduced damage. When serving as a secondary commander, he does less damage which isn’t helpful at all.

Five Tiger Generals

When attacking garrisons, increases normal attack damage. Normal attacks have a 10% chance to reduce a single target’s attack for 3 seconds.

Upgrade Preview:

Normal Attack Damage Bonus: 3% / 6% / 9% / 12% / 15%
Attack Reduction: 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% / 30%

Five Tiger Generals increases the damage of normal attack by 15% when attacking garrisons. Plus there’s a small chance to reduce the enemy’s attack by 30%. Which helps out a lot with bolstering Guan Yu’s army to withstand the full brunt force of enemy garrisons.

The Slaying of Hua Xiong

Increases infantry units’ attack and march speed. Upon leaving battle, Guan Yu heals a portion of slightly wounded units.

Upgrade Preview:

Infantry Attack Bonus: 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% / 30%
Infantry March Speed Bonus: 3% / 6% / 9% / 12% / 15%
Healing Factor: 500 / 600 / 700 / 800 / 1000

A nice 15% bonus to march speed and 30% attack. Whenever Guan Yu leaves the battle, he heals a bit of the wounded units. This passive skill is awesome because it takes up less of your resources and extends his army lifespan.

Green Dragon Crescent Blade
Green Dragon Crescent Blade ROK

When the skill “Saint of War” hits only 1 target, there is a 50% chance to deal additional damage to the target. When the skill hits 2 or more targets, there is a 50% chance to deal additional damage to the current target.

Upgrade Preview:

Additional Damage Factor (1 Target): 600 / 700 / 800 / 900 / 1000
Additional Damage Factor (2+ Target): 800 / 900 / 1000 / 1200 / 1400

This passive skill serves to bolster the active skill damage by dealing additional damage. If you deal 1 target, there’s a 50% chance it will do 1,000 extra damage to that target alone. But, if you do hit 2 to 3 targets, then all of them will get 1,400 extra damage which is a massive push to Guan Yu’s active skill.

Lone Rider

Whenever Guan Yu gains a shield, he also increases his active skill damage by 15% for 3 seconds. Whenever Guan Yu leaves a structure, he increases his march speed by 100% for 3 seconds.

Lone rider simply gives Guan Yu 15% increased active skill damage when he gains a shield. Furthermore, his march speed is increased by 100% after leaving a structure which plays a lot with mobilizing around on the map. This gives Guan Yu strategic advantage over your enemy players who don’t have this stellar combat capabilities.

Mehmed II

Mehmed II ROK Commander

Guan Yu is already a very powerful nuker, so why not pair him with Mehmed II to turn this combo into a killing machine? In this combo, Guan Yu still maintains the role as primary commander, although both will benefit a lot from expanded troop capacity, increased skill damage, and Mehmed II’s powerful active skill damage.

This combo will be able to dish out heavy blows, crippling multiple targets within a matter of seconds. At the same time, when you are attacking enemy garrisons, Mehmed II is well equipped to do serious amounts of damage and can activate his active skill for free to do extra damage. Definitely one of the best commanders to pair for nuking.

Alexander the Great

Alexander the Great ROK Commander

If you want to take advantage of the 15% active skill damage as well as increased march speed, Alexander the Great is a good legendary commander to pair with. Whenever the shield is up, gain 30% defense bonus. And when the shield is down, gain 40% attack bonus.

Bonus point, when he activates his shield, portion of the incoming damage is reflected back to the attacker. Plus, increases their damage taken by 30% for the next 4 seconds up to 3 targets. Alexander the Great and Guan Yu is another solid combo for players who want a tanky pair.

Charles Martel

Another solid legendary commander to pair with is Charles Martel. He is already an extremely formidable commander on the battlefield. With Guan Yu, you get an extended firepower to the infantry troops. In addition to that, Charles Martel features built-in shield which soften incoming attacks.

Richard I

Richard-I ROK Commander

One of the best defensive commander that provides the most form of protections against incoming attacks. If you want to strike a perfect balance between attack and survivability in contrast to Charles Martel. Sun Tzu is a very powerful epic commander that hits up to 5 targets and deals quite a massive amount of damage.

Guan Yu also will benefit from 20% increased active skill damage that Sun Tzu has to offer. Even though so, Sun Tzu specializes in defense and still remains a viable choice to pair with Guan Yu due to his superior zone of control.
