Background Information

Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, (2 April 742 – 28 January 814), united the majority of western and central Europe in what became known as the Carolingian Empire, the first major empire in western Europe since the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
Charlemagne was the eldest son of Pepin the Short and Betrada of Laon. He became king in 768 following his farther’s death, initially as co-ruler with his brother Carloman I. Carloman’s sudden death in December 771 left Charlemagne as the sole ruler of the Frankish Kingdom. He followed in this father’s footsteps, protecting the Roman Catholic Church, conquering the Lombards, and campaigning against Muslim Spain and the Saxons. He was crowned “Emperor of the Romans” by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day of the year 800.
The stability of Charlemagne’s empire gave birth to an age of prosperity and development known as the Carolingian Renaissance. During this time, Charlemagne gathered many of Europe’s greatest scholars and artists to his court and instituting an education system for the ruling class based on those of the former Roman Empire. This period of time is perhaps best remembered for a surge in the restoration and creation of monumental architecture, great cathedrals and churches, and for the large amounts of ancient art that were preserved by Charlemagne’s empire.
While Charlemagne was lauded throughout Europe and by the Pope as the true Romand Emperor, this created a schism with the Byzantine Empire (aka the Eastern Roman Empire), and was among the reasons for the split of Rome and Constantinople, creating what is now called the Catholic and East Orthodox churches.

Happy Home is an interesting passive skill that gives Charlemagne a small chance to activate a shield that absorbs 1,000 damage. Plus, there’s no trigger restriction which is a very strong passive skill to have.

Pataum is a very strong passive skill that you must max it out. It is like a double-edged sword which increases the damage of your active skill when your army strength drops. Upwards to a maximum 60% skill damage bonus and 84% skill damage bonus when attacking cities is incredibly strong. With these numbers, Charlemagne can deal upwards to roughly 3,500 damage every time he activates his active skill.

When attacking a city, 10% fewer of your troops will die, and instead will be severely wounded. |
This passive skill is absolutely godsend when you use Charlemagne to attack cities. In addition to his conqueror talent build, 10% of the troops will be injured instead of getting killed in the battle. Which means you keep more troops, allowing a quick recovery.
Best Charlemagne Talent Trees
If you recently picked up Charlemagne as your new commander or isn’t sure what to invest in his talent tree. Then you are in for a surprise because there are 5 viable talent builds that you can use which works well around his skill set. Below are our top 5 recommended talent builds that you can use, depending on your gameplay, strategy and preferences.
Conqueror Talent Build

This talent build is one of the best choices by default mainly because Charlemagne comes with a strong conquering skill set. Which means this talent build will benefit him the most. It is incredibly flexible and will allow this legendary commander to work with any type of commander. Additionally, the speed of rage generation is improved that enables him to do massive blows when the size of army strength is reduced.
Mixed Army PvP Talent Build

Don’t get me wrong, Charlemagne is excellent at PvP battles like Arenas and Expedition. That’s because he is capable of withstanding heavy blows thanks to the ability to pull up a shield to absorb damage briefly. At the same time, he can dish out massive damage to eliminate the enemies quickly. If you want to do 3+ troops army, this talent build will give 3% bonus in both attack and defense when running that build.
Pure Army PvP Talent Build

This talent build is similar to the previous one, except it doesn’t give a 3% bonus in both defense and attack if you use 3+ troops type. Ideally, this talent build works the best when you are running one-type of troop like full infantry, full cavalry, or even full archers.
Mixed Army Field Talent Build

If you want to have a commander who can really do massive and heavy blows in rapid succession. This talent greatly builds the rage in a short time. Plus, this talent build gives 3% bonus to both attack and defense when using 3+ troops-type.
Pure Army Talent Build

Just like the previous one, this talent build works like a charm when using a full-troop type, meaning only infantry, cavalry or archers under Charlemagne’s leadership.

- Level Charlemagne at 4 ⭐ until you max out all of his skills.
Best Commander Pairs
Charlemagne is already a formidable commander on his own. But you can elevate his combat strength even further by pairing with other stellar commanders who will take down your enemy defenses with ease. While tanky, strong and powerful, Charlemagne really can use some extra help to deal even more damage — and vice versa, take in more damage. Here’s our recommended commanders to pair with him:
Guan Yu

Guan Yu is one of the best commanders who specializes in infantry. If you pair with him, then by default he takes the position as the primary commander. Mainly because you want Guan Yu to do more damage with his active skill. The skill set that Charlemagne has will astronomically increase Guan Yu’s damage of skills.
Which really helps out with dishing out serious blows to cripple the enemy defenses in matter of time. Plus, the shield will help Guan Yu offset a small portion of the incoming damage. Solid combo.
Genghis Khan

If you really love the idea of being able to have the rage of your commanders’ abilities reduced. Then pair with Genghis Khan because he is one of the most powerful nukers in the game. He can inflict massive blows and there’s a 30% chance to trigger a second, similar active skill for the same amount of damage at no extra cost.
When the strength of the army is below 50%, increase the damage of active skill by 30%. Genghis Khan runs pure cavalry which will work well with Charlemagne if you want to have a fast commander combo with high damage output.
Hannibal Barca

Alternatively, you can do 3-type army build to gain 3% bonus in both defense and attack. You can even go further than just these bonuses with Hannibal Barca. He is one of the best legendary commanders who specializes in multipurpose army and a very powerful conqueror when used with the right talent build.
In this combo, Charlemagne takes the role as primary commander using either Mixed Army PvP talent build or Mixed Army PvP Field talent build. One of the main advantages for playing with Hannibal Barca is expanded troop capacity upwards to 15% boost, self-healing and reducing the enemy attack / defense by 25% for 5 seconds after using active skill. A solid commander to work with.
Additionally, you can pair with Aethelflaed as she excels with a multipurpose army and if you want to kill barbarians more quickly along with experience bonus.
Baibars

If you do not have any available legendary commanders to pair with Charlemagne. You will have to find a great epic commander that will benefit the most when it comes to pairing with this legendary commander. Fortunately, Baibars is a solid epic commander that commands incredibly powerful damage and can hit up to 5 targets.
His attacks not only deals massive damage but slows targets that allows this pair to effectively control your enemies. Thanks to Charlemagne’s flexibility army, you can easily tailor Charlemagne to Baibars’ talent system to maximize cavalry bonuses in attack, defense, march speed and health.
Sun Tzu

Another epic commander that’s also worthy of pairing with Charlemagne is Sun Tzu. He is already a formidable starter epic commander that’s available to all players who picks China as their starting civilization. Equipped with fiery active skill that can hit up to 5 targets and deals a massive amount of damage. One of Sun Tzu’s passive skill further increases the overall damage of active skill.
With Charlemagne’s passive skill that extends the maximum damage done of an active skill by an additional 15% along with 20% boost. This pair will easily transforms into one of the best and most dangerous pairing that is a force to be reckoned with. You will have no issue tailoring Charlemagne with one of Sun Tzu’s talent builds for best combat performance.
